Creating License Types

License types are reusable product configurations: name, description, price, currency, deliverables, active state, and optional terms text. They do not by themselves determine legal rights or seller policy.

In The Library, you manage all your license types from a single place in Settings. Once created, you can assign different licenses to individual tracks and set custom prices for each one.

Accessing the License Types Panel

Open Settings from the left sidebar, then scroll down to find the Licensing section. You’ll see a list of your current license types at the top of this section.

If you haven’t created any yet, the panel displays a friendly empty state with a prompt to add your first license type.

Understanding the Panel Layout

The license types panel shows each license as a card displaying:

  • Name — the license title (e.g., “Non-Exclusive Lease”)
  • Price — the configured price and currency
  • Deliverables — which files are included (MP3, WAV, Stems, etc.)
  • Status — active or inactive

Below the list, you’ll find the Add License Type button. If you want to start quickly, look for the template buttons that let you import standard license structures with one click.

Creating a New License Type

Click Add License Type to open the creation modal. Fill in the following fields:

License Name

Give your license a clear, descriptive name. Buyers see this first, so make it immediately understandable. Common naming patterns include:

  • “Basic Lease” or “Non-Exclusive Lease”
  • “Premium Lease” or “Unlimited Lease”
  • “Exclusive Rights” or “Full Buyout”
  • “Sync License” for film and TV use

Price

Enter the selling price in your preferred currency. The field accepts decimal values, so you can enter “29.99” rather than “2999 cents.” You can set different default prices for each license tier — exclusive rights typically cost significantly more than non-exclusive leases.

The service validates a non-negative price when the license type is saved.

Description

Use the description to explain the configured product information in plain language. Do not rely on a description alone as a legal-rights guarantee.

Deliverables

Check the boxes for each file type included in this license:

  • MP3 — Compressed audio, easy to share
  • WAV — Uncompressed CD quality
  • Stems — Individual instrument tracks
  • Track-outs — Full session files for maximum flexibility

A basic lease might include just MP3 and WAV. A premium lease often adds stems. Exclusive buyouts typically include everything plus the project file.

Exclusive License Toggle

is_exclusive is a configuration field on the license type. It does not, by itself, guarantee a transfer of ownership or automatic removal of a track from sale.

License Terms

You can store terms text with a license type. Obtain appropriate legal advice for any agreement you offer; this documentation does not define the legal effect or permanence of that text.

Active Status

The Active checkbox controls whether this license appears for selection. Disable it to temporarily hide a license without deleting it — useful if you’re reworking your offerings or only want certain licenses available during a promotion.

Using License Templates

If you’re not sure where to start, load a predefined template, then review and edit its fields before using it. Templates are code-provided starting data for common structures such as:

  • Non-Exclusive Lease
  • Premium Lease
  • Exclusive Rights
  • Sync License

Editing and Deleting Licenses

Editing

Click the Edit button on any license type card to open the modification modal. All fields are editable. Changes you make update the default template, but individual tracks can have custom pricing that won’t be affected.

Deleting

Click Delete to remove a license type. If it has existing purchases, The Library deactivates it instead of deleting it.

Inactive licenses disappear from the active list but remain accessible in your records.
